Mineral fertilizers are not the only source of nitrogen

Intensive farming requires significant amount of mineral fertilizers, first of all NPK. For farmers, who specialize in integrated or organic farming, where the application of mineral fertilizers is limited or prohibited, the issue of mineral nutrition is essential as well. 2022 challenges farmers with skyrocketing prices and risks of availability of mineral fertilizers, especially nitrogen, gas price making up to 80% of its cost. Being able to minimize the rate of nitrogen becomes a competitive advantage.

Mineral fertilizers are, however, not the only source of nitrogen for agriculture. It has been known for years that some microorganisms are able to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, of which it makes up to 78%, and share it with plants. In the course of nitrogen cycle, plants use nitrogen as a building material and eventually return it to atmosphere. This makes air a sustainable unlimited source of nitrogen for agriculture.

There are two types of nitrogen-fixing bacteria: free-living and symbiotic. Unlike symbiotic bacteria, which can only cooperate with a specific plant genus, free-living bacteria, such as Azotobacter spices, are universal and will provide virtually any plant with additional nitrogen. 

What is AZOTOHELP and how does it work

Azotobacter chroococcum is the basis of one of the BTU-CENTERs top products, AZOTOHELP. It is intended for different types of application: pre-sowing seed treatment, treatment of potato tubers, root feeding, fertigation, foliar feeding (spraying) of plants during the growing season. When working solution of the product gets into the soil, Azotobacter chroococcum bacteria begin to process molecular nitrogen (N2) into ammonium (NH4+) and nitrates (NO3-), which plants can easily consume.

Due to Azotobacters universal character, AZOTOHELP is helpful for all kinds of crops, including cereals, vegetables, fruits and berries, as well as for technical and decorative plants. Academic researches mention that Azotobacter chroococcum colonies will be able to fix and process into available for plants form an average of 20 kg/ha of nitrogen, with the recorded maximum of 60 kg/ha. The exact amount of additional nitrogen that AZOTOHELP can provide will depend on the specific conditions of the field: type of soil, pH, level of moisture etc.

Besides producing nitrogen compounds, bacteria in the composition of AZOTOHELP release plant hormones, which enhance plants growth. There are three main types of these, and they have different functions within agrosystems. 

BTU-CENTER launched AZOTOHELP into the market of Ukraine in 2005, and today, the products is actively applied in 12 countries and listed in the European inputs list for organic farming. Auxines

Produced by Azotobacter accumulate in the apical parts of plants and contribute to plants ability to consume nutrients, stimulate the division of cells inside plant tissues, stimulate formation of roots and inhibit leaf wilting.

Gibberellins

Stimulate growth and development of the stem, promote germination of seeds, tubers, bulbs, enhance flowering.

Cytokinins

Facilitate photosynthesis, regulate cell division and promote balanced plant growth and slow down leaf senescence.


The efficiency is proved in fields

In all field efficiency studies, we compare how the product performs on a trial area to how the usual farm technology performs: that is, if a farmer uses mineral fertilizer at a certain rate, we use the same amount of the same fertilizer, and add AZOTOHELP. This allows us not only to compare the physical yield, but also to understand the economic efficiency of product application, knowing the years farm prices for certain crops. Thus, we have calculated that, for the past 3 years, considering the average crop prices, the increase in farmers income is about $170 per hectar.
