INDUSTRY INSIGHTS: VLADYSLAV BOLOKHOVSKYI ON MARKETS, REGULATION, AND THE FUTURE OF BIOLOGICALS
In the December 2025 issue of 2BMonthly, as part of the annual State of the Industry feature, executives from leading biocontrol and biostimulant companies shared their perspectives on key industry challenges and trends. Below is answers provided by Vladyslav Bolokhovskyi, CEO and Co-founder of BTU, presented in a question-and-answer format.

Question:

Brazil has been a key growth driver for biologicals, but suppliers are now facing increasing price competition. How do you view the current situation and future trajectory of this market?

Answer:

Brazil is not the only market facing this challenge. When it comes to biologicals for row crops, producers must apply a pricing strategy that ensures profitability for farmers while still covering distribution costs. The market is very large, but margins cannot be as high as in high-value crops.

As a result, the market naturally splits into two segments. One consists of more “commodity-like” products, where price and consistency are critical, and differentiation comes mainly through service and supporting tools. The second segment includes more “high-tech” solutions- higher-priced products that must clearly stand out, deliver additional value, and generate measurable profit for the customer.

At BTU, we work with both segments. However, for external markets such as Brazil, we primarily focus on differentiated products such as Liposam, as well as advanced, stabilized formulations of our microbial solutions including Azotohelp, Groundfix, and Ecostern.

Question:

Africa has often been referred to as the biologicals industry’s “sleeping giant.” When do you expect this region to emerge as a fully developed agricultural market, and why?

Answer:

This is a deep and important topic. Africa clearly has enormous potential- both in terms of agricultural land and population. The main challenge today is the overall maturity of markets and agrotechnologies.

That said, over the last decade we have seen significant progress in countries such as Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, and South Africa. Large investments from regional and international organizations are accelerating improvements in agrotechnology, infrastructure, and education.

Based on our experience, particularly in Morocco, we believe that over the next 20–30 years this region will become highly competitive, supported by educated and experienced industry professionals. Technology adoption will gradually expand to other African countries as well.

We therefore expect a real boom in biologicals in Africa around 2035–2040. BTU is already taking steps in this direction: initial registrations and supplies have taken place, and together with our partners we are implementing our expertise in soil health regeneration, abiotic stress management, and biocontrol.

Question:

To what extent is regulatory inconsistency across Asian countries limiting the growth of biocontrol and biostimulant markets?

Answer:

In some cases, regulatory inconsistency can be viewed not only as a disadvantage, but also as an opportunity. Certain countries have more open and flexible frameworks for biologicals, and we appreciate the ability to move more quickly in such markets.

At the same time, there are very specific national positions that create serious limitations. A clear example is India’s approach to external microbial strains, which makes it nearly impossible to introduce certain innovative solutions. In our view, farmers are the first to suffer from such restrictions, as they lose access to globally available and proven technologies.

At BTU, we believe that long-term harmonization will gradually develop, leading to science-based rules with reasonable registration budgets and timelines- measured in months rather than decades and ultimately opening a full toolbox of effective biological solutions to farmers worldwide.
